Project Description

A Competition project, envisioned as a cultural hub for Bengaluru with a global outlook, the Bangalore International Centre (BIC) is designed as more than a building—it is an urban space for people. Set on a narrow site adjoining an existing nalla (storm-water drain) and surrounded by residential and commercial developments, the design opens itself to the city through a series of accessible, free-flowing public spaces. The guiding idea of “Open to All, at All Times” allows the lower levels to become places for gathering, exhibitions, performances and interaction, while the upper volumes appear to float above this public realm. Exposed concrete and brick establish a strong, timeless material language, balancing solidity, protection and openness.

The “Sky” is an integral part of the architectural journey, experienced through courtyards, terraces and open spaces as a symbol of freedom within an increasingly dense city. The tall brick wind towers are both architectural landmarks and passive environmental devices, capturing prevailing winds and directing them into basement chambers for filtration and climatic conditioning before circulation through the building. The journey culminates at the Open Air Theatre, conceived as a truly public space and carefully positioned between the high walls along the nalla and the dormitory volume, creating an effective acoustic buffer for the surrounding residential neighbourhood. Ultimately, BIC seeks to give back to the city—creating a cultural landscape where people, art, knowledge, nature and architecture come together.
