Project Description
The BIC was envisioned as a Cultural hub for the city of Bangalore to reach out via its activities to a global audience. Site was adjacent to an existing Nalla ( storm water drain ) on a narrow plot in the city of Bangalore. It was surrounded from all sides by existing residential & commercial buildings.
The Concept developed around creating an “Urban Space” which is lacking in the City. The Building was envisioned as a “Open to All at All Times” kind of building whose lower floors would always be Open for the people to Use – for an exhibition, to perform, etc – accessible, while making its own statement of a Solid and Protected environment, safe and secure – at the same time being an Urban Space. The upper Volume would be ‘Floating’ above the lower free-flowing Spaces – from the Entrance to the Open Air Theatre at the end.
Wind Towers standing Tall above the building would catch the wind and bring it into the basement collection chambers from where, after filtration, and cooling / heating as per requirements of the prevalent climate, it would be pushed into the Ventilation system. The ‘Sky’ was addressed throughout the Building experience. It was being looked upon as the most simplest and uncomplicated part of our Life today – providing a complete sense of Freedom and Open-ness, not otherwise available in this City that is increasingly becoming chaotic and urbanized.
The Open Air Theatre at the end of the path of Movement is this Space that is Open to All. To ensure that the Noise that might emanate from this space does not disturb the surrounding Resiential area, it is surrounded by the High walls on nalla side and the Volume of the dormitories on the Residential side.
